 The old basin & Lieutenance

The old basin & Lieutenance

The whole formed by the Old Basin, the picturesque houses of the Sainte-Catherine quay, the Lieutenancy and the Saint-Etienne church is certainly what strikes you the most when you visit Honfleur for the first time.
This basin was created, at the behest of Abraham Duquesne, and by order of Colbert, in 1681, to replace the old beaching harbor or " inside harbor ", which was much narrower, which required the destruction of the western part of the ramparts.
On one side of the Vieux Bassin, on the Quai Sainte-Catherine, a whole series of tall houses form an original backdrop. These houses, pressed against each other, of different sizes, have the particularity of having their upper floors facing the rear on rue du Dauphin and rue des Logettes, so that they almost all have two different owners.

The Sainte Catherine Church & It's Faubourg

The Sainte Catherine Church & It's Faubourg

The Sainte-Catherine district developed when the city walls were built. Maritime district, "seafarers" have left their mark there. Their old half-timbered houses remain.
Dating from the second half of the 15th century, the Church of St. Catherine replaced an old stone church destroyed during the Hundred Years War. It was built by the inhabitants of the town after the departure of the English. Having few means then, they used wood, as araw material, coming from the forest of Touques as well as their knowledge in shipbuilding.
Listed as a "Historic Monument" in 1879, it attracted the attention of many archaeologists and historians: it is the largest church in France built of wood with a separate bell tower.
